Flocking Birds - The Ravens

I have directed the ravens to supply you...

Take notice of the Bird's nest 

Deep inside the book of  I Kings in the BIBLE, Chapter 17:4, there is a scripture about the Ravens.  The verse goes as follows, "I have directed the Ravens to supply you." I like the sound of this!  This message is hand written on the bottom  near the tree. 

The colors are the same as the others and blend well.  

I love the mountains in the back-ground and the light blue sky.  The birds sitting on the branch sort of suggest that they are there to provide and protect.  

I love the LEMON gold frame.  

 This is the second ROUND frame and I think having 2 ovals  thrown into this mix really will make for a nice display for my UPCOMING Doylestown show in September 2016.  I intend on having a nice collection of smaller pieces.  

This is what it looks like NOT in the frame.  I painted it in a square format so that I can have a print made off of it.

The Love Birds 

Recently, I came across some wonderful gold leafed frames.  They were round ones and I thought to myself, wouldn't these be a beautiful addition to my tree silhouette series?  I am painting these for Spicher and Co and they will be available as a print; however, I am also painting these for my show in September 2016 in Doylestown, PA.  I felt that the silhouettes were folky and fun and different, making them a nice addition to my show.  

 I would date these frames to be around 1930-35.   The smooth one maybe earlier. The upper one was marked Philadelphia on the glass.  

I loved the filigree on the top upper frame and felt that it would work well with the theme of this painting.

This is written across the bottom of the tree. 

I even love the crack down the center of this frame.  Isn't it neat how imperfections can sometimes be what makes something unique and beautiful?  

Wouldn't this make a neat marriage painting?  The love tree!!

Flocking Birds 

The Valleys are mantled with grain… 

If you have looked at Flocking Birds 1-3, you will see that they all hold a unique message.  The writing is not 'in your face' but rather a little subliminal.  That's my style.  I have always wanted my paintings to carry a message.  

This was the basic painting, minus the tree.
Excuse the wire, I later cut it off, annoying! 

So in painting this, I exaggerated the size of the wheat somewhat.  I wanted it to be obvious that it was not just yellow grass but rather some sort of grain.  

This is a bit blurry, but i water my tree to have a gnarly look to it.  After all, it is the only tree in the field.  I wanted it to stand out.  

There are many sayings painted into this painting.  The birds are suppose to be in the duck/geese family.  I don't know what birds they are…smile. 

It wasn't as important to me to know the bird variety, I was more interested in the formations that the birds create.  Can you see the tiny ones, top left of center?  

Some of the sayings are as follows: All the trees of the field will clap their hands; The mountains and the hills will burst into song before you, Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; The grasslands of the wilderness overflow, the hills are clothed with gladness; Let all the trees of the forest sing for Joy.  Finally, this is my favorite (very relevant for the days we live in,  too): He makes peace in your borders; He satisfies you with the finest of wheat. Ps 147:14.

All these paintings are one of a kind and unique.  They are featured in ANTIQUE frames.  I happen to like antiques.  If you would be interested in any of these in a new simple black frame, I can do that, too.

Flocking Birds - Painting No. 3

Vision 

The Linear flight formations of migratory birds  are called ECHELONS. 

A famous philosopher once said that Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.  I really liked this, and for me it rings true.  

Vision inspires me on a daily basis.  It keeps me going; vision helps me believe that I have hope, that things can improve, that I am well… This is a very important subject to me.  Many people reading this know that I have struggled with ovarian cancer much of my adult life.  

Did you know that your vision defines who you become?

Vision is VITAL 

Recently,  it occurred to me that MY vision for MY future is what enables me to have joy in MY today.  I must believe that I am well, even when my body tries to say otherwise.  It is the art of seeing what is invisible.  This is truly the essence of Faith.   

A little blue, a little black, a little green…and WALA! they all go well together! 

One must believe that behind the darkness, there is a dawn.  Not only does this dawn create light, but it defines the darkness creating forms of beauty.  A silhouette begins to  form.  In a nutshell, this  is what my Flocking Birds series is about.  

This was Flocking Birds No. 1 

I am one of those people that happen to believe that the birds hold wisdom, little truths that are lost to those who do not take the time to watch them.   At night, you cannot see the birds, but  You still believe that they are there because you may hear them.  At the break of dawn, they start to sing.  The light hits them and something beautiful unfolds.

Like the other two paintings, Vision has little sentences written in the grass and on the branches and in the sky.  Each sentence holds a truth about VISION.

Flocking Birds, Painting 2

Birds of a feather...

Number 2 

I am having some fun with this.  Now, I just need to find some unusual and beautifully shaped trees for No. 3. 

Instead of Scripture, this one has a bunch of "BIRD sayings" written in the grass

I am currently in love with vintage and antique lemon gold frames.  I found this one recently with a mirror in it and quickly tore it apart for this painting.  I like how the sayings are written in the grass.  One thing that I am really enjoying painting are the horizons.  If you look at Flocking Birds, post 2, painting 1, you will see a different horizon in that painting.  I love the blue mountains.  

You can see that this painting is somewhat smaller than the first.  However,  They go very nicely together.  

Each saying is different from the other and is about a bird and some truth that a bird holds.  People love birds.  There are many bird groups (people that study birds).  Ornithology the technical name and is a branch of zoology that concerns itself with the study of birds.

Flocking Birds

It isn't everyday that I stand at my window and see this.  I live on a mountain, this is true, but generally there are not this many birds at my back door at once!  This was a beautiful site.  They flew back and forth and in PERFECT unison.  I couldn't help but think of that scripture "Consider the Birds."  I have actually used that title before on a painting.  I keep returning to it.  Part of what made these birds so beautiful was their unity.  I think there is a sermon in there somewhere…  

I like how the tree is off center. 

Although, I like how it is off center, I don't think I like how it is not plumb.  It will need to be straight.  This picture sort of reminds me of Alfred Hitchcock, The Birds.  That part is sort of creepy, but I will make it alright! Look at the crisp blue sky…lovely! 

I like this tree.  

There are aspects of this tree that I like.  I intend to incorporate some of the folky nature of this tree.  It is fun and playful.  

Look at the beauty of each bird.  

While I might not be able to capture this day perfectly, I will do my best.  Check back in tomorrow for more photos of the actual painting!
