The Tale of Two Whales 

The water is clear and the whales are free 

Have you ever gone on a whale watch?  I have and for some reason, the guide didn't go up and close!  Maybe the old whale is a little forbidding and needs to be viewed at a distance!

I love the red boat!  These six guys are brave!  I wanted them to be front and center and the water crystal clear!

Trying to figure out the title was just as much as a challenge as ever.  After a while I came up with The Tale of Two whales!  (A take off from The tale of two cities).  

I like it next to my mermaid!  (NFS).

Original Whaling Scene, Maine

Curtis Island, Maine 

Today, I started a custom painting that will be what I like to call a story painting about Curtis Island, Maine.  

We are starting with this lovely large period frame.  I believe this dates to about 1820-30.  It's original and comes with all the little qualities that make it very desirable.  The finish has not really been touched.  It is about as original as it gets.  

My customer lives near this lighthouse.  This is Curtis Island (above).  I love the sailboat.  

Here's my drawing for the above frame! 

This is actually  on a small piece of paper that I proposed to my customer.  I call it a thumbnail sketch.  Actually, it's a bit larger than a thumbnail.  I am going to be painting a mini-painting at the same time.  

The composition will be very similar for the larger painting.  I will post pictures as I progress!

I love the color! 

This painting will have lots of action!  There will be a large whale, ship, and some sailors.  I am even going to paint a little man at the lighthouse! 

Lastly, here's a closeup of the frame.   It's a beauty.  The picture doesn't do it justice!  This painting will be behind glass when it is finished.

I don't know now I come up with these titles but they work.  I just imagine that they would have to use banners and signs to get the word out, Worthy Whalers Wanted!

So this is an antique frame.  I painted this on canvas so it is not behind glass.    

The colors go well with the other paintings that I have done.  Most of my work blends with each painting that
I have done in the past.  These both are for sale on ETSY today.

I love anything nautical.  My house is full of all kinds of props!  I like how these look sitting behind the ducks.

For Scale

I use acrylic paint.  I love to use vibrant colors to depict things but also manage to subdue them if necessary, don't like garish colors.  

I wrote an inspirational saying on the back.  Isn't this so true?  Sometimes, when I look back at what we have had to do, I think WOW, how did we ever do it!  Doing what looks

impossible starts with the first step...

Thar' She blows 

Acrylic Nautical Painting on Paper

I am having a lot of fun painting this series.  Thar' She Blows is the second painting that has been finished and is part of my new "Tattoo art" group.  The first entry was of a ship.  I posted it about a week ago.

Minus the Glare, I LOVE this shot.  

Some of the things that make me think "Tattoo" are the heavy black lines and the opaque coloring.   Somehow, I feel these old sailors would have been speckled with tattoo art.  Anchors, flags, mermaids, etc.

This is supposed to have the feel of an old Trade Advertisement. 

I have always had a fondness for the sailor and his lifestyle…  He certainly looks patriotic with the American eagle and criss-crossed flags!
