The Rebecca 

Today, I am presenting a ship portrait that I am calling, The Rebecca.  This was painted for a valentine's gift and it is a surprise from a guy who calls himself KEV.  That is on the ship, too! 

I painted this on canvas that I crackled using my secret technique, LOL.  

In this shot you can kind of see how the water comes together and the sails.  As time progresses, I paint more and more lines. 

I thought that this was the frame and at first I was going in a different direction with this.  Instead of it being my custom piece, I had decided to call it something different.  At the moment, I am a little infatuated with George Washington.  That flag is the Washington State flag, alas that was painted out! 

I added more and more lines and flags to the sails.  Boy this baby would fly in real life!  

Do you see his initials under the American Flag!?? 

More and more flags and lines.  My lines never make sense, either.  This boat may literally fly.  

The scalloped sea shell frame is really pretty.  It is the perfect size for this and is what I decided to use in the end.  

I decided that while this is pretty, it is too crunched from top to bottom. 

This one is too smashed from side to side. 

This one, uhhhhh, just right.  Don't you agree?

Let's Celebrate - a snow scene by Pennsylvania Artist Kolene Spicher

Let's Celebrate 

Over the River and Thru the woods 

I know its winter outside, but would someone please tell the weatherman to act right.  It's like 70 and its February.  I went ahead and painted a winter scene (I started it a few weeks ago), but

it's just plain balmy out.  It doesn't feel right. 

This was an order.

Look at that man warming his hands, I hope he doesn't fall into the fire! 

The frame is so very cool.  It came from the Amish.  Here this 80 year old man named Rufus seems to enjoy cutting barns down and recycling the wood.  He even signs some of his frames.  This frame came with a back that had a name written in ballpoint ink, maybe it's the barn this wood came from. 

Is this Grandma? 

I am trying to keep things light, happy, and bright.  This is a winter scene that is about celebrating.  Maybe I feel like being happy because I had some surgery in December and it went well and is all behind me.  I started this right after coming home from the hospital.  What fun. not. but I am thankful.

I don't know if that is grandma, but that is ME down there holding the pumpkin. 

This painting is sort of Grandma Moses like.  There's that word again...grandma. As you can see, I am into polka dots at the moment.  

This gives you an idea of the scale.  Do you like that Cabinet?  That was my dear sweet mother's!

Sea Captain Sailor New England looking gentleman surrounded in seashells

A very fine Captain! 

This guy looks so cool in his blue spectacles.  I have always loved the idea of placing my paintings in a seashell frame.  The problem for me was that I never was able to find a frame!  Problem solved! 

I first played out the shells on top of the painting.  Just for your own information, I found these shells in the Ocean Cit, NJ area while walking along the beach! It's amazing that I didn't lose them, lol. 

After gluing them to the paper, I was ready for the perfect frame.  I found this wonderful lemon gold frame a few years ago and have been holding out for the perfect piece.  This is mostly because I paid a small fortune for the frame. 

Smile. I might just keep it.  

I also antiqued the black paper which doesn't translate here but will translate on the original.  I have to modify the frame to receive the shells.  This will be a chore because it will need to blend well against the antique frame.  No worries, I am up for the task. 

Thanks for looking today!  I don't know when this will be listed for sale.  I might hold on to it for a while just in case I try to do a show in the fall!

Step 1 of Winter Scape painting by Kolene Spicher

The Development of a Winter Scene Painting 

(If you live in the Wilton, Connecticut area, this painting is being developed for a show at the Wilton Historical Society on November 6-8, 2015 ~ read about it at www.americanartisanshow.com)

**There are two shows going on simultaneous to one another this November 6-8, 2015 weekend.  They are both in the same genre and share the same collector base.  I am at the show affiliated with the WILTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY on Danbury Road, Wilton CT.  This is their 30th year.  

I don't have any real direction for this painting as of yet.  It will end up falling into a category that might be in-between my mermaid scenes and that Rufus Porter look.  I cannot decide if I will include mermaids or just have it about people.  I don't have any clear cut direction as of yet!  I am just painting.  This is day 2.  

I painted in a few people in the background! 

The houses get larger as they come to the forefront.  I happen to really love the contrast of red houses with snowfall. 

I always paint from top to bottom and back to front! 

Today, I plan on sketching in and painting the sleigh.  I always have a sleigh.  Normally, I have ice skaters, too.  We shall see!  Tune back tomorrow to see the unfolding of this piece! 

Although you might not realize it, This is a larger painting.  I am not sure that this translates in the photographs.  LOTS MORE TO DO!
